Asthma, a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways, can range in severity from mild to life-threatening. Inflammation and mucus narrow the breathing passages in the lungs of a person with asthma. Classic symptoms include wheezing, coughing and difficulty breathing. Complications can occur when other health conditions, such as respiratory infections or diabetes, are also present.
