Diabetes, insulin dependent
Also called type 1 diabetes, insulin-dependent diabetes occurs when a person’s pancreas doesn’t produce insulin (insulin is needed to convert glucose – sugar – into energy for the body). Insulin-dependent diabetes usually begins in childhood or adolescence. Complications over time can include cardiovascular problems and damage to the nerves, kidneys or eyes. Note: Estimates below are based on Medica Choice network contract rates and include one year of care for treating insulin-dependent diabetes (for example, physician visits, tests, medication and supplies, etc.). Estimates are shown for primary care clinics and practices with endocrinologists.
